Rio San Juan

An hour or so from Sosua to the east with a guagua (pronounced "wah-wah" - the workhorse of the public transport system in the Dominican Republic, consisting of private minibuses - basically four wheels and an engine plus anything that hasn't fallen off yet.) lies the town Rio San Juan. With fewer tourists, a less attractive beach and a little less noise this seemed a more peaceful place to stay. We found a little hotel at the end of a street, which gave us the hope of some silence during the night. The only problem was that we got to the town just in time for a local festival - the "Carnamerengue 2000". Huge loudspeakers were placed only 20 metres from our room, and the noise went on till 4 in the morning, only to be replaced by garbage trucks and men cleaning up the mess. This went on for two nights, which wasn't a bad thing in itself - the festival was very interesting. But as we had no electicity or water for the last 24 hours of our stay, and there was no generator at the hotel, the smell started to bother us a little. So we went to the guagua stop and went via Cabrira, Nagua and Sanchez to Samanà - a long 4-guagua trip that took the rest of the day.
